This has to be one of my favorite Autumn preschool projects! I start by asking the children to bring in an empty milk carton. I love to see how happy they are to bring them in. Surprising the parents are happy all willing to bring in more! I have been making these pumpkins for some years now and I have finally think I have it right!
Supplies needed:
- Empty washed milk carton
- toilet paper roll
- zip tie
- orange paint
- Orange spray paint (if wanted)
- black construction paper
- Fall color construction paper
- whole punch
- Scissors
- Paint Brush
- led light or glow stick
- Black sharpie to write their name

I pre assemble the Milk Cartons at home to save on time. However, if your making at home the child can do most of this. I start by peeling of all the labels on the carton and making sure they are rinsed so as not to smell!! Then I cut around the top cap. I used to put a glow stick in but they were not real bright. So I now cut a hole large enough to fit a led pumpkin light inside. I then spray paint the cartons orange. In the past it was to much to paint for some of my little guys and the paint chipped off when dry. I find the spray paint helps it from chipping. Then I punch a hole in the top handle of the carton and the bottom of the toilet paper roll and attach them with the zip tie.
The zip tie works great so when your ready you just flip the toilet paper roll up and add your light then flip it down. Our classroom Pumpkin Patch is ready!
I always make more than 10 then they can choose their pumpkin! I cut shapes out of the black construction paper and leaves out of the fall color paper. In the past I have used silk leaves and this year I even put out real dried leaves from our sensory table! The children just paint and stick! It’s that easy and fun!!
I like to put out as much as possible. My favorite part is watching each pumpkin become unique! We set them on our window to dry. For our Harvest Party we add the led light! I have been told by previous parents they bring it out year after year!
